Transgender Europe presents paper “Human Rights and Gender Identity”
Posted : Sep 13, 2011

Transgender Europe's (TGEU) research project “Transrespect versus Transphobia Worldwide” (TvT) publishes the Italian translation of the ground-breaking “Issue Paper Human Rights and Gender Identity” of Human Rights Commissioner Thomas Hammarberg of the Council of Europe.

The Issue Paper has increased the visibility of trans issues since its publication in July 2009. It is ground-breaking in that it provides a summary of the manifold human rights violations against trans people and posits demands and remedies of how the situation of trans people should be responded to by the CoE member states.

With the Italian translation, this important document will now become more accessible to the Italian trans community and will provide a useful tool for advocacy work in Italy and for Italian speaking activists. TGEU distributed the print version at the 15th ILGA Europe conference in Torino, Italy. Now the PDF version is available on the TvT website.

Transgender Europe (TGEU) already published three translations of the paper, into Spanish, German, and Polish. These publications initiated the publication series of the “Transrespect versus Transphobia Worldwide” (TvT) research project. The Italian translation is the fourth volume of the TvT publication series. Further translations will follow.

The four volumes of the TvT publication series can be found as PDF files

on the TvT project website:

http://www.transrespect-transphobia.org/en_US/tvt-project/publications.htm

Print copies of the TvT publication series can be obtained from the TvT research team. See contact information below.

TvT is a comparative, ongoing qualitative-quantitative research project, which provides an overview of the human rights situation of trans people in different parts of the world and develops useful data and advocacy tools for international institutions, human rights organizations, the trans movement and the general public. A research team from Transgender Europe coordinates the project, which is funded by the Open Society Foundations, the ARCUS Foundation, and partly by the Heinrich Boell Foundation.

If you have further questions or if you want to support the TvT project,
