Jamaica is regarded as one of the most homophobic countries in the world. Gays are often subject to violence, discrimination and ridicule. Former prime minister Bruce Golding summed up Jamaica's homophobia by saying on Hardtalk interview that he would never appoint a gay to his cabinet. Since the 2011 general election new prime minister Portia Simpson-Miller has said that the buggery laws should be revisited and she does not support discrimination against gays. Only time will tell if she meant what she said.
